Electric vehicle distribution company BasiGo has announced that it has been granted the right to supply CATL batteries in sub-Saharan Africa. BasiGo has become the first company to be authorized to supply CATL batteries in sub-Saharan Africa. CATL is the world’s largest manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles (EVs).
The partnership will enable BasiGo’s technology staff to repair and maintain CATL batteries across the continent. BasiGo’s announcement on August 10, 2025, indicated that it will collect end-of-life batteries and use them in other useful projects in Africa.
Through the partnership, BasiGo Kenya and BasiGo Rwanda will represent CATL’s services in the region. BasiGo service teams in Kenya and Rwanda will receive specialized training and equipment from CATL to enable them to provide battery repair services at the African level.
CATL batteries are used in BasiGo buses and many electric vehicles in Africa. BasiGo service teams will be equipped with state-of-the-art battery testing and repair equipment, as well as spare parts to provide fast and reliable service.
BasiGo CEO Jit Bhattacharya said this is a major milestone for BasiGo and a testament to the capabilities they have built in Kenya and Rwanda.
He said batteries are the most critical component of electric vehicles, and CATL is a global leader in battery technology. This partnership will enable us to continue to monitor the performance of CATL batteries in Africa, in our buses, and for all other electric vehicle owners on the continent.”
He affirms that BasiGo’s ability to provide quality services has contributed to CATL’s recognition as a good partner. “BasiGo’s experience and presence in Africa make it a strong partner for CATL.”
Saba Azizi, Head of Customer Service and Support for CATL’s equipment in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, said that this partnership is an important step in expanding CATL’s global service network and supporting sustainable passenger transport services in Africa.
“This partnership will make CATL’s battery repair services available in Kenya and Rwanda. This will significantly increase the uptime of vehicles and reduce the time and cost of ordering parts and replacing damaged battery cells.”
He also said that the BasiGo facility will be used as a collection point for old batteries and will facilitate CATL’s global strategy for reconditioning and recycling them. This move to become a CATL partner comes at a time when the market for electric vehicles is expanding rapidly in Africa, especially in the passenger and commercial sectors.
